Mandala – sand art space

Sand Mandala

Once in the Hot Springs Complex, bathers will find various spaces to chill out, relax, and unwind. The Sand Art Mandala is a space where you can create temporary art for fun. For a day at least, your art becomes part of the relaxing ambience. It is part of the larger area at the Springs where bathers can launch their sporting activities on the water of the Warrego River. Swimming, kayaking, paddle boarding and the like.

Circular Structure with Triangular Placement

I was surprised when this painting emerged on the canvas as it was not what I intended to paint!. But the circular structure attracted me. This is the underpainting. The one an artist does when planning out a painting, I will glaze this here in my unit and then go back out next weekend to put the reflections and leaves into the mix.

In the meantime, I will be playing with composition and planning the frame. The painting will become squarer, with the triangle artists love to use, skewing to the left while viewers look at it. The frame will be the red colour of the dirt here, and the red will echo onto the rocks.

As I glaze and prepare the frame for this painting, I will journal about it here. It won’t work as a painting until all of the various contrasted textures are added.

Lightening Ridge

Business Trip with a Difference

It is a long way to pick up the bits and pieces needed to mount an exhibition! I am in an outback motel ‘living it up’ at Lightening Ridge. I have come to pick up this Milk Can.

All my trips are not just about building my business, which will eventually be an Art Gallery. The trips are also about defining my artistic process. I missed so many photo opportunities last night because I was driving. I snapped this one when I reached LR.

I will get out to the outlook tonight and capture images I couldn’t take while driving. I will meet a lady in Moree at lunchtime and pick up a milk can for $290. Seems expensive? That is the market price for ‘milk can’ because they are difficult to find. Even if you do find one, people will not let them go.

To justify such a long trip to pick up an item – I need to fit in a fair bit of creative work. Stay tuned.

Taking Off

I have often wondered why artists donate work for auctions, but I have come to the conclusion that some people do service work, some join Lions, and some donate paintings. There is the obvious added benefit of getting the art seen.

The artwork was initially created for an exhibition last year. It was painted at Golden Beach and was called Taking Off because that is where I hoped my art career was headed. Consequently, the painting signifies the joy of freedom and the enthusiasm that comes with confidence. I hope whoever wins the bid will enjoy the painting as much as I enjoyed painting it. I don’t know how the auction process works, as this is my first time.

Sharon Harper-Green has sent an email – “April is shaping up to be one of the most exciting we’ve had in Tourism. We’ve had some brilliant entries in the Outback River Lights Art & Sculpture Competition. Our April Exhibition will be Art & Sculpture entries from our region and beyond. It opens on Thursday the 11th April at 6:00pm. Please join us for drinks and canapes.

The Outback River Lights Festival opens on Friday, 19th April, and closes spectacularly on Sunday, the 21st of April“.

Hope to see you all at the River Light Festival.

Amaranthus as an Artistic Subject

Golden Beach Reverie

This painting is called Golden Beach Reverie. I was surprised when Tonya asked me if I wanted some Amaranthus here in Cully. I love the colours and the unusual shapes of the Amaranthus, so I was eager to try my hand at growing it. This will provide a constant source of artistic ideas.

As always, I was keen to know all about the plant and its properties. As I returned to the car from picking up some seeds, I noticed hibiscus growing at RESQ. So, I asked about getting a plant. Here it is! You can see the Amaranthus seedlings behind it. You can see a Gumbi Gumbi to the side.

I have spaced the Amaranthus along the fence for support, with Snow peas in between. When these Clitoria ternatea are grown enough, I will place them between these plants to create a tangle like the painting above.

The properties of the Amaranthus are many and varied. Complex enough that they will be the subjects of an upcoming post. It is a hardy plant and can be regarded as a weed. For some, it is a staple diet. You can read about it on Wikipedia.

In the meantime, check out how I have been creating products from the above painting.

Easel – Makes the Difference

Having the Right Tools is a Plus

I love my new easel. I didn’t even realise this kind of equipment existed! You attach the canvas by screwing it into the frame from behind. Then, once it is very stable, you can tilt up and down. Rotate and lay it out flat. It makes painting so much easier.

They say a bad workman blames his tools. But do they have a saying that having the right tool for the right job makes the day go much more quickly?

I am going through all my tools and methods and asking myself – “What is my bottleneck”” Avi from Fantastic Framers discussed this idea of streamlining the process in his last conference call.

Tannock Weir is Really Running

Action shots – theme man planned integrated with nature

It is interesting. You don’t see people swimming or kayaking. I am keen to get back behind the paddle but a bit cautious. So, I satisfied myself exploring the theme of integrating man-planned structure with nature. Interesting pattern above.

I’ve called this photo Frothy! I love the patterns, the froth and the swirls. I am still heading towards abstraction. Interestingly, the AI process on this website suggests I explain more of my artistic process. At the moment, I am just on the hunt for exciting photos.

I am taken by the contrast between the rippling water and the sculpture of the deadwood/driftwood along the edge of the Warrego.

Speaking of man-planning, grass and wire netting hold the rocks and sand in place. We haven’t had much rain here, so this is all coming down from other places. There is no need for sandbagging and the like. I will do my research and see if this is Mitchell Grass.

I am resisting realism for the time being. Trying to lighten up and search for essence rather than superficial appearance.

Emergence of Abstraction

Reaching for Meaning – Mining for an Idea

This photo definitely wasn’t an afterthought—something I just happened to snap at the Hot Springs this morning. On the contrary, I was exploring a theme that will emerge through my work until culminating in an exhibition at the Information Centre in September. 2024.

Abstract paintings will explore the nexus between man-planned and nature. When the Hot Springs were designed, the architects and landscape artists did more than just fit into nature. They sought to fashion architectural forms that will fuse into the landscape.

This curvilinear shape reminds me of an artist’s palette; in a sense, that’s what the springs will be for many: a space where kookaburras sit quietly, gazing out over the water while writers write and gardeners laze and dream.

Look into this image. What do you see? I see a fertile space where creativity can surge from the depths of experience.

Elance “start-up” competition

This is an explanation of the resources we have already created for the project we are putting forward for the Elance “start-up” competition. Until now this project has operated under the name of Global Citizens Art. When I tried to register this name and procure a website address, I could not get one with clear ownership. True Gusto was available and symbolized the relish with which I hope our plays, animations, and games both online and off are received. The arts based business is now registered in Australia with the domain name http://true-gusto.com

Global Citizens Art with all of its resources also still exists – below please find a table with a list of our resources.  It will be updated regularly as these resources grow.

True Gusto is the parent company of Global Citizens Art the text book designed to bring the teaching of Language and the Arts as Language together.

Basis of an Understanding

Basis of an Understanding

This eBook will soon be released as a print on demand.  It will also have workbooks released to provide practical application of the concepts described.  In this book, I talk extensively of CODE and set the scene for a thorough exploration of the idea of codification.  I explain how codes evolve and how students can learn to be code breakers and creators.

Codification

Codification

Virtual and Traditional Jigsaws in the Classroom  (and Hindi Translation by Usher of Elance) This book explores the nature of co-operative project based classrooms. The idea of codification and gamification are explored.  A scenario for teaching students HTML is laid out in a plain and simple style.  Co-operative project based classroom environments are explained.

A professional understanding of Gamification. (Description in Elance competition entry.) The Transmedia project will render phonetics fun and attractive through gamification designed to draw the children and other learners into the system.  The image to the right is made from tiles.  These tiles will be turned into playing cards and a gaming app.

Transmedia Approach

We have begun an approach by linking FRASB, Suite101.com..sample 1 / sample 2 and Wizzley.  We have a Suite called Creative Arts Leadership and another called Becoming a Freelancer, while Anita Saran’s Flash Fiction Suite provides guidance through workshop opportunities.  Here is an example of the connections made between these spaces and Elance. What Ever Goes Around Comes Around this is a poem that has been put to music  WHAT EVER GOES AROUND by an Elance Professional Catherine Smart.

The Play Elf Talking to Sanata

We have a play that needs adapting – repurposing and songs co-authored and co-participatory stories written on Elance.

What's Happening?

I have everything ready, but need the funding to draw the project together with Elance professionals.

We want to stage the play on Nauru or if this is not possible in Fiji  We also want to develop the play through scripting animation via Elance Professionals.  We will be looking for venture capital to develop and market the animation.  This is to fund future Transmedia Projects.

I have the necessary qualifications, experience and motivation to run this project and may well be on Nauru for the remainder of the year.   I already have good working relationships with various authors on Elance and will be sure that any new workers are contracted through the Elance work boards.

Make Freelancing PayHello, my name is Daisy McCarty  I’m a long time Elancer and am very excited about the potential for this startup competition. I met Jo when she read and reviewed my recently published eBook “Make Freelancing REALLY Pay”. Her insights into the freelance business demonstrate her business acumen and her background in education makes her highly qualified to receive support through this startup contest.

Jo’s idea for promoting Intercultural Understanding through the Creative Arts is quite compelling and creative. I do believe that collaborative teaching/learning is the wave of the future, and ideas like this are the seeds from which this new educational system can grow. Jo has a demonstrated track record for networking and collaborating with other freelancers and I believe she will put those Elance credits to very good use. I’m also excited that she could have a shot at presenting this worthwhile project to venture capitalists! She has my wholehearted support, and I encourage you to give deep consideration to her entry.   Sincerely,  Daisy McCarty

000249615Hiya, I’m Jo Harrington. I first met Jo Murphy on Suite101 and quickly became impressed by her creative talent. Her enthusiasm is highly infectious. I have found myself attracted into projects, with her at the helm, which ordinarily would have passed me by, simply because she makes them appear so attractive. Her passion meets any challenge undaunted, and she’s a lovely person too.  I support Jo’s proposal for using creative means to promote Intercultural Understanding, as I know she is the perfect person for the job. She can move mountains when she tries!  Author of A Writer’s Guide to Wizzley.

Kate FarrantKate Farrant, I support this competition proposal to promote Intercultural Understanding through the Creative Arts.  I originally met Jo when she was teaching in Toowoomba I was her student and found Jo most helpful in my quest to complete resolved work.   We met again  on Face Book where she noticed my work and wrote an article about my jewelry and how to write jewelry descriptions.  Jo taught us exhibition skills and I know she always follows through on projects.  I can see huge potential for the project and can see that Jo is able to network with other artists in such a way as to bring the project to fruition.  I know that Jo is passionate about providing work opportunities for artists especially students.  I think the project sounds like fun and value all cultures and their representation through the creative arts.   I support Jo wholeheartedly.

Hi, my name is Russell Hughes. I have my own company and am in the process of launching an internet art business called The Modern Art Club  I have used elance to connect with skilled freelancers in writing and design. I have worked with Jo via elance for several months – her writing on the creative arts is very well researched, brings out the essence of a subject, and challenges the reader to think and engage with the subject matter.

I know Jo’s interests cover the use of creative arts in a number of ways which can make a real difference to peoples’ lives, and she is passionate about the combination of art, technology, communication and teaching skills to promote cultural understanding and learning. I support Jo’s competition proposal to promote Intercultural Understanding through Phonetics enhanced and made enjoyable through the Creative Arts. There are not that many truly big ideas, this one is, and the elance community can make it happen.
Good luck!  Russell Hughes
